Objectives £º The purpose of this study was to compare the assessment of internet gaming disorder (IGD) defined within DSM-5 to diagnostic interviews by psychiatrists.
Methods £º One hundred and eighteen 7th grade adolescents were recruited consecutively during October 2015. Psychiatrists conducted face-to-face diagnostic interviews for IGD and checked for the nine suggested DSM-5 IGD components and psychiatric comorbidities.
Results £º Psychiatrists diagnosed 10 adolescents with IGD judged by clinically significant functional impairments which substantially contributed to the gaming problem. However, four out of the 10 diagnosed adolescents did not meet the DSM-5 IGD diagnostic criteria. Among the nine DSM-5 IGD components, preoccupation and loss of control were highly endorsed in the 10 psychiatric diagnosed adolescents. Withdrawal and loss of interest were slightly endorsed in four adolescents who did not satisfy the proposed cut-off for DSM-5 IGD criteria (C+D-group). Five out of six DSM-5 diagnosed IGD adolescents had psychiatric comorbidities. On the other hand, one out of four adolescents in the C+D- group had psychiatric comorbidities.
Conclusion £º The results revealed a diagnostic gap between assessing IGD as defined within DSM-5 and diagnostic interviews by psychiatrists. Natural clinical progress through cohort observation could be used to elucidate true IGD.
